Paul Hart

WHEN DID YOU START RUNNING AND WHY?   First started running in 1993. I started running to lose weight, was 15 stone and felt I needed to get fitter.

FAVOURITE THING ABOUT DUMFRIES RUNNING CLUB?   Everyone encouraging each other to achieve their own goals, whatever level they may be at. Being able to have a laugh.

POSITIVE EXPERIENCES WITH DUMFRIES RUNNING CLUB?  Being supported by the club for my Bob Graham attempt (42 Lake District peaks in 24 hours) last year, total of 15 club members involved.  Organized running weekends away by the club doing the West Highland Way , Hadrian’s Wall relay, or trail routes in the Yorkshire dales combining good running with good food and drink afterwards! Getting support from everyone as my running performances have improved since I joined the club 3 years ago.

HOW DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE IMPROVED?   Since joining Dumfries Running Club 3 years ago my running has improved significantly, culminating in being selected to run for Scotland as part of the 100K team this year.  My improvements since joining the club have amazed me: 10K best from 40:11 to 36:02, ½ marathon best from 1:31:14 to 1:19:53, and marathon best from 3:20:13 to 2:43:39.

FAVOURITE PLACE TO RUN?   Trail routes in the Yorkshire dales, following routes of the Wharfedale Marathon and the Yorkshireman marathon races.

FAVOURITE TYPE OF RUNNING/DISTANCE?  Long distance trail races, typically distances over 20 miles requiring navigation/following directions as you go.

WEEKLY MILEAGE?  For the last 6 months I have been averaging 50 miles per week.  With selection for Scottish 100K team mileage has now increased this to 80 miles per week.

MOST SATISFYING RUN/PERFORMANCE?   Running the Lochaber Marathon 2006, first time I broke 3 hours for the marathon (2:56), after missing out by 20 seconds at the Dumfries marathon one month earlier.
