Hardmoors 60 Ultramarathon

Hardmoors 60 Ultramarathon

Four races, 260 miles, 13,000 metres ascent – the stats don’t begin to do justice to the Hardmoors Ultra series on the Cleveland Way.   Organised by Jon and Shirley Steele, both extraordinary ultra runners themselves, with a team of exceptionally friendly and caring marshals, the races have a real family feel, whilst also being run with professional efficiency.   Last Saturday 19 th September saw the last race of the series.   Seb Pflanz was one 195 starters on what promised to be a stunning, if rather hot, late summer’s day.

The Lakeland 50 is regarded as one the greatest ultra running and walking challenges in Europe. It is run over the second half of the Lakeland 100 Ultra Tour of the Lake District, completing the final 50 miles of the 100 course. The Lakeland 100 starts at 6pm on the Friday evening and the Lakeland 50 starts at 11:30am on the Saturday morning of race weekend. The 50 however is not the ‘easy option’. To complete it requires a huge commitment, firstly to train for it and then to run it. And then you need more commitment and determination to actually finish it when many who have attempted it over the years have not.

West Highland Way Race

West Highland Way Race

Conditions for this years’ West Highland Way race were described as ‘horrendous’, with torrential rain right from the start making the going very difficult for competitors and support crews alike. Parts of the trail were described as being more akin to a stream rather than the familiar 95 miles of well used walkers’ path. Of the 172 who lined up at Milngavie for the 01:00am start there were 119 who crossed the finish line at Fort William with 8 people having had enough by the 1st checkpoint!....

Dalbeattie Civic Daze

Dalbeattie Civic Daze

Sunday saw the inaugural running of the Dalbeattie 10K and Half Marathon. There are often teething problems with new events, from which lessons can be learnt for the next year, but unfortunately the weather is a variable beyond the control of any race organiser. The heavy rains and hence risk of flooding meant that there had to be a last minute change to the morning's 10K course, which seemed to be generally approved of by most participants as the route then became a straight out and back avoiding the promised hill, though unfortunately it meant that the course was no longer an accurately measured 10K. Luckily the afternoon's half-marathon route was not affected, and so remained a lovely scenic course.

Durisdeer Hill Race

The Durisdeer course is recorded as 16km with 1150m of climb, although competitors with GPS report that it measures slightly shorter. There are 3 main phases of the course: the first 2km sees a rapid 350m ascent of Black Hill, with the course then dropping steeply down to a road and river crossing at about the starting level. The next 5km loops round the back of Steygail, with 2 ascents of 120m and 230m over passes along the way. The final 6km starts with a 370m climb to Well Hill, followed by an undulating ridge run to Black Hill before descending to the finish along the route of the initial climb.

Ladies win National Title

Ladies win National Title

It always seems to be bitterly cold for the Scottish Open Masters Relays at Strathclyde Park, but although the runners still had to run over patches of ice, the "loch" was actually full of water rather than ice. There was a record entry this year of 19 ladies' teams and 46 men's teams - all 4 teams from Dumfries Running Club performed well over the 3.66 miles distance, but the stand-out run came from the first ladies' team (The Flying Doctors) who led the competition right from the first changeover, when Lisa Finlay handed over to Sian Finlay. Lisa also recorded the 3rd fastest lap of the day, with Jo Zakrzewski anchoring the team home with the second fastest lap of the day. The team beat the time set by last year's winners by almost a full minute.

7th January - 2011 Monthly Handicap Race Results after 1st Race

The first of the new format 5K handicap races was held on Thursday 6th January at the Crichton.

On a very cold night, the first finisher claiming the maximum 50 points available was Susan Gallagher who had a great run in 23:10. Fastest on the night was Paul Hart in 18:24.

The results are available here.

As a reminder this new 5K format replaces the old winter and summer handicap series. It is hoped that the shorter 5K format will attract more club members to take part. Disappointingly, only 11 members took part in this first race. Your club needs your support to turn out for these handicap races for them to continue to happen!

Final 2010 Handicap Grand Prix Results

The Handicap Grand Prix results for 2010 have now been compiled. These were based on awarding points for how well each runner did compared to there expected handicap time in the following races during 2010:
Holywood Stroll, Castle Douglas, Dumfries 10K, Christmas handicap race.

The final results are available here.

The top 3 places for 2010 were:
1. Mhairi Duff - 69 points
2. Kevin Conchar - 68 points
3. Liz Smart - 68 points
