Devil Takes the Hindmost

11/09/2019

Last Thursday Dumfries Running Club members took part in an unusual event at the David Keswick Centre. Organised by coach Doug Brown and supported by Margaret Gray and Les Hill, the devil takes the hindmost event is designed for runners of all standards to see if they can develop sprinting speed that can help them in upcoming races

Split into 4 groups from A to D everyone covered three quarters of a lap at a steady pace then slower runners got the chance to sprint at the earliest stage A which gave them a head start over the faster ones and the last person to cross the line was caught by “the devil” and was forced to drop out. Each entrant was given a small plastic token which they could trade in, just the once, to get a chance for a short rest period.

After a mile warm up, the best tactic was to aim to finish in the middle of the pack and the field of 25 was gradually whittled down as it became tougher to maintain the regular sprints. Eventually the field was narrowed down to the final pair of Michael McKean and Mike Jardine and youth won out over experience as Michael won by only half a metre in the final sprint .Hopefully this will help the training of those taking part in upcoming races such as this month’s Dumfries half marathon.
