This free programme for absolute newcomers to running has been a resounding success. 

Starting on Monday evenings in the first week of January, the organisers, Dumfries Running Club had a regular turnout of two dozen at Dumfries and Galloway College where week one started with 30 seconds of jogging alternating with 30 seconds of walking with everyone completing this 10 times. Weeks two and three of the 10 week course saw an increase to one, then two minutes of jogging and the increase in confidence and motivation is tangible as most people have easily stepped up to four minutes of jogging and everyone tackles their homework with enthusiasm as they aim to walk and/or jog a similar distance at least one other time in the week.

The numbers have stayed constant under the leadership of Sandy Shankland, Margaret Gray, Val Coltart, Sue Jeffrey and others who encourage and support everyone to achieve their potential. Starting with a warm up real progress can be seen where groups of newcomers from week one are now able to chat freely whilst running in groups as breathing comes much more easily. Week 10 last Monday saw everyone manage to complete 2km non- stop and certificates were handed out to those taking part and it is hoped that the positivity and fun and friendship will continue over the coming weeks and months.
