Cross Border 10k

02/02/2019

This year's 10km Cross Border Challenge also on Sunday saw almost 700 runners on the start line, six of whom represented Dumfries Running Club.

In its eighth year, the event from England to Scotland, is one of a select few cross border runs anywhere in the world. After difficulties last year caused by the sheer number of participants, the organisers introduced chip timing which helped make the race run more smoothly

The first section looped around Kingmoor Industrial Park and then out onto the breezy back road to Gretna. Initially flat, the route is parallel to the M74. There were road junctions and short blustery climbs to negotiate however excellent police and marshal presence ensured everything went smoothly. The route provided no shelter from the strong winds, with illuminated road signs warning passing traffic of its stormy force. The race finished in the car park of the Greens Hotel in Gretna where water, bananas and power bar bottles and gels were available. As it was a point to point race, a shuttle bus returned runners sporting their well-earned medals back to Carlisle.

The first club runner in 188th place was James Brash in 50.17, three places and three seconds ahead of Skye Sarahs. Karen Littlejohn ran well in 52.22 finishing two minutes ahead of Fiona Jardine. Yolande Davies had a superb run in 55 56 knocking almost 10 minutes from her time last year and Jacqueline Wilson thoroughly enjoyed her first race in almost a year, finishing in 1:27:02.
