West District Cross Country 2018

11/12/2018

On a wet day at Kilmarnock 3 DRC runners took part in the West District Cross Country Championships.

The course length was altered slightly this year meaning the ladies and men’s distance were billed as 8.5k or approximately 5.3miles. This seemed to be further according to GPS watches, however this may have been due to runners not taking the extremely muddy and heavy racing line.

The ladies set off about 45mins before the men with Nicola Hood the sole DRC runner. Nicola came into the race after a summer of injury and was hoping that recent training would pay off. In what can be described as typical cross-country conditions, Nicola appeared to be coping well after the first short lap sitting in 3rd position with 1st and 2nd slightly ahead. Nicola had company to contend with and had to “fight” to hold onto 3rd position.  Nicola duly fought off the other runners who were in close contention to finish strongly on the podium with 3rd place. Of the 3 DRC runners Nicola was approx. 1 minute quicker than her two male team mates. Several reasons were considered for this, it was muddier, it was wetter, the list went on, however in reality Nicola is just an extremely good cross-country runner!!

The men’s race set off shortly after the ladies finished and the course was found to be heavy under-foot and runner’s sort of slide their way round the many tight corners. Alan Baxter found himself ahead of Charlie Storrie for the first half mile or so before the positions changed. Charlie slowed slightly on the second lap with Alan catching and passing him. Charlie showed some grit though during the final lap by regaining the position as first male DRC runner.  Finishing quickly, Charlie stretched his lead to 6 seconds finishing 73rd overall with Alan 76th (9th Vet 40). It was a tight race with 4 runners recording the same as Charlie and 3 runners the same as Alan.

After a cool down it was off for a nice warm shower…alas no hot water left…Nicola did you use all the water was the cry!!
