Dalbeattie Hardrock Challenge

17/10/2018

Now in its 15th year, the hardrock challenge has matured into a real highlight of the sporting calendar and attracts runners and riders from all over eager to test themselves in a very tough event.

The initial part is a 10 mile run on forest trails combined with a highly technical 16 miles on the mountain bike with more than its fair share of difficult descents, tricky climbs and hazards.

13 members of Dumfries Running Club took part in the running section and only James Kellock, Adam Dickie and Craig Malcolmson, using their local knowledge were up for the challenge of the mountain biking. The fastest run of all came from Thomas Cornthwaite who broke the course record in 56.38, under six minutes a mile on tricky terrain.

The fastest club performer was Alan Baxter who was 6th in 65.31, a minute ahead of Jonathan Dale while Kevin McQueen in 67.07 was seventy seconds and three places in front of Charlie Storrie. Simon Mortlock who has been in very good form recently finished in 69.07 a few seconds in front of Adam Dickie who himself was ten seconds in front of Lisa Finlay and Adam then completed the cycle section as a solo entrant in a very respectable 2 hours 40 minutes overall.

Competing on home territory Norman Neilson ran well in 73.53 three minutes ahead of Ranjit Thomas while James Kellock in 76.58 was pleased to complete the whole course in 3 hours 13. Stephen Mohan in 80.20 finished thirty seconds in front of David Burns and Andy Davis in 92.59 was pleased to complete the course with his son in law Daniel Patterson.
