This race, held on Tuesday May the 8th attracted an excellent entry superb entry for a well organised 5 mile race on rural roads on the outskirts of Dumfries.

Organised by David Burns and Sandy Shankland  backed up by a whole host of helpers from Dumfries Running Club the race went well and allowed many local runners to measure their progress and get an accurate idea of their early season form. To mark the 25th anniversary, the first race organiser, Tom McGowan, was invited to start the race and was the guest of honour who presented the prizes

On a warm evening the race was won by former Dumfries Running Club member Mickey Breen now running for Corstorphine AC in Edinburgh in 26.22 twenty three seconds faster than last year, for his sixth victory in the past eight years. In second place was club newcomer Tom Cammack in 26.52, a time that would have been good enough for victory in many years with Matthew Sullivan of Shettleston in 27.28 in third.

The first male 40 vet was Andrew Stevenson of Dumfries Harriers in 7th place and Jim Buchanan of the host club was the first over 50 runner in 29.32 in 5th and the first over 60 male was race organiser Sandy Shankland  of Dumfries RC in 32.35.The winning male team was Tom Cammack, Jim Buchanan and Colin Holden all of Dumfries Running Club.

In the womens race Lisa Finlay of Dumfries RC was quickest in 30.12 and she was made to work all the way by Ruth Joss of Shettleston who was 8 seconds behind with Donna Burnett of Dalbeattie third in 34.02 The veterans prizes were picked up by Lisa and Donna with the supervet female prize won by Janet Priestley of ADAC. The winning team was the Dumfries RC trio of Lisa Finlay, Sophie Canty and Sue Jeffrey

As a result of the excellent conditions many runners were able to put in some very good performances. There was a healthy turnout of club runners from Dumfries Harriers, ADAC, Dalbeattie Running Club, Dumfries Tri Club and from further afield which enhanced the event and added to the competition.

Thanks are due to Dumfries Sports Club for hosting the event and the prize giving.
