Screel Hill Race

19/04/2018

On Saturday 14th April, the Dumfries Running Club Hill Race Championships took place on Screel Hill.

Due to upcoming race commitments, only 7 club members were able to take part.

Conditions on the day were dry and cool for the start at one o’ clock and as with the Criffel race a few weeks previously a number of very good hill runners from around Scotland were on the start line.

The race does not have an easy start with a sharp climb all the way from the start up to the cairn at the top of the hill. From there a short downhill offers false hope before the runners are asked to climb back up before a last fast downhill section on the fire road all the way to the finish line. This year the warm weather and views from the top ,for those who  had time to look at them, combined with new paths on the lower section of the route that were more accessible for walkers made things slightly different  as there were fewer technical sections than previous years. There were some very muddy sections along the tops between the two summits and likewise on the descent through the woods to the treeline. The race was very well supported with people dotted all over the route cheering runners.

The fastest club runner was Jonathan Dale in 10th place in 37.18 on his debut and he showed excellent speed on the downhill to move clear of Craig Malcolmson by over a minute. Despite feeling unwell beforehand Adam Dickie still managed a good run in 39.17 finishing just over 30 seconds in front of Simon Mortlock. Seb Pflanz in 44.05. Sue Jeffrey in 47.00 was delighted to be almost 2 minutes faster than last year and she was doubly pleased to head off Ranjit Thomas by a few strides in the final stages.
