Scottish Masters Cross Country Championships

08/02/2018

On Saturday, 3rd February, four Dumfries Running Club members participated in the Scottish Masters Cross Country Championships at Kilmarnock.

The Masters championship is open to athletes over 40 and the competition is amongst runners in five year age bands up to the age of 64. The four Club members were Kevin McQueen, Jonathan Dale, Jim Buchanan and Les Hill.

The course was 8K (5 miles) suiting the traditionalists with plenty of mucky, slippery underfoot conditions with a steep drop and subsequently steep climb on two of the longer laps. There was even a fallen tree that had to be crossed.

Such a course was best tackled by wearing spikes in an attempt to get a good grip. All four enjoyed the tough race with the outstanding performance being that of Jim Buchanan who won the Gold medal and was crowned the Scottish Champion for the Male 50 to 54 category with a time of 32 minutes 19 seconds. This placed him 19th overall, out of 260 starters, as he competed very well against runners in the younger age groups.

Next home from the Club was Jonathan who finished 65th in 34.52 with Kevin just four places further back in 35.07. Les was pleased with his time of 38.20 to finish in 130th place and well up in the 60 to 64 category. Jim, Jonathan and Les narrowly missed out on third place in the over 50 team awards. They finished fourth but only four points behind the third placed team.
