DRC Dinner Dance 2018

21/02/2018

Last Saturday thoughts of races and training were put aside as 75 friends, family and Dumfries Running club members gathered at the Locharbriggs Social club for the annual dinner dance.

This was an opportunity to mark a successful year, to celebrate those who won prizes for various categories and enjoy a night out.

The male and female champions were awarded on the basis of one race, the Doonhamer 10k in august and out of the 32 club members who took part, Richard Beck and Nicola Hood were the male and female club champions for 2017

The Grand prix award which is a best all -rounder competition which involves performances over a variety of races and distances over the year went to Alan Baxter and Jo Zakrzewski. In the age group awards Kevin McCaig retained the supervet category for men and Jo, Anne Macfarlane and Margaret Laurie won the vet 35, and the more senior categories respectively. The cross country championships were held at the National cross country championships at Falkirk in February with Alan Baxter and Nicola Hood winning the honours. Nicola had a superb run in this event and was 6th overall in the entire race.  The hill race championships were held at Tinto in October with Adam Dickie and Jo Zakrzewski collecting the trophies.

Over the course of the summer points are awarded on the first Thursday of every month for the 5k handicap, expertly organised by Les Hill. With each entrant running without a timing device the closest to their anticipated time won maximum points and Louise Craig won this award and managed to improve her performance each time she raced.

The Christmas Handicapis normally held on the Holywood Stroll 5 miles course but in December it had to be changed at short notice due to extremely slippy roads to laps round the cricket pitch at Nunholm with Skye Sarahs as the winner.

The beginners group award was given to Trish Murphy for the dedication and effort she has shown in graduating from the jog Scotland group to taking part in several races throughout the year. The David McNaught award, in memory of the late club treasurer, was given to Val Coltart for the support and encouragement that she gives to newcomers at the jog Scotland and beginners groups on a Monday. The Des Park award, again in memory of someone who completed marathons regularly in club colours and who did so much to encourage newcomers, went to Les Hill who was the first in the 60+ age group at the Lanzarote marathon in December

The Peter Hill memorial award for someone who has helped encourage newcomers on their first steps in running was presented by Jane Hill and given to Fiona Jardine. The team of the year was given to Alison McKean, Hazel Smyth and Sue Jeffrey for a superb performance at the midsummer Highland relay in June. The award for contribution to the club was given to Ranjit Thomas for organising the Criffel hill race each year and hosting the 2017 Scottish hill championships which he also managed to take part in.

After the prize giving long time club member Rab Wilson was presented with an Aberdeen football club cake to mark his birthday celebrations. Club members showed their stamina by dancing all night to the music of local band The Florentines and, as usual, thoroughly enjoyed an excellent evening. Thanks are due to the staff at the Locharbriggs Social club for providing an excellent venue and the hard working catering staff and to all who helped make such a memorable night.
