Scottish Veterans Harriers Club Relays

31/01/2018

Last Sunday at the Scottish Veterans Harriers Club road relay championships at Strathclyde Loch in Motherwell two Dumfries Running Club men's teams challenged themselves against some of the best veteran runners in the country.

Although rather early in the year for many people to be thinking about racing the championships are always a popular event and this year’s race on Sunday 28th was no exception with 51 teams entered. The route is a 3.8 mile lap of Strathclyde Loch in Motherwell, and is mainly flat but with some sharp turns and small hills. Both ladies' and men's races start simultaneously, but the male teams have four laps to run against the ladies' three.

On leg 1 there was a keen rivalry between Jonathan Dale, running for the more mature over 50s team and Alan Baxter. With an excellent run in 21.07 Alan was 13th fastest overall and headed Jonathan by 26 seconds. On the second leg for the over 50s Kevin McCaig had a superb run in 22.17 and handed over to male club captain Les Hill who always responds well in team situations with a strong run in 23.33 before handing over to Jim Buchanan who brought the team home in a very fast 21.16. This superb team performance in 88.39 meant that the over 50 team were third overall in their category losing out to the eventual winners Shettleston Harriers by only 73 seconds.

The other DRC team also performed well with Alan handing over to Kevin McQueen who gained a place in 21.54 and Mike Jardine in 25.17 was slightly disappointed with his run on such a wet and windy day and he handed over to Brian Mohan who brought the team home in 24.51 to finish in a creditable 29th place out of the 51 teams
