Christmas Handicap 2017

20/12/2017

The highlight of the festive running calendar, the Dumfries Running Club Christmas handicap, was held last Sunday morning with the intention of doing it on the 5 mile Holywood Stroll course.

In its 31st  year the race attracted a smaller than usual turnout of 14 club members eager to see if they could match up to their own targets as each entrant set their own start time and ran without any form of timing device.

As well as this turnout 10 other club members were marshalling and recording the finishing times to make sure the event would go ahead with others offering on course support. Each entrant provided a wrapped Christmas present and this provided an extra incentive to push on to try for the best possible time.

The weather conditions however meant that the usual route had to be changed at the last minute as icy conditions were especially hazardous. A compromise of a dozen laps round the Nunholm cricket pitch meant that the event could go ahead albeit in different form. The 2017 winner was Skye Sarahs who completed the course in 30.15 and was the closest to her finishing time. In second place was Stephen Mohan in 23.57 and in third was Alan Baxter in 19.38 just in front of Les Hill in 22.08. Kevin McCaig rounded off an excellent 2017 in 4th place in 21.38, just in front of Mike Jardine and Karen Littlejohn. Saty Burns just managed to hold off fast finishing Joey Malone and Mark Johnstone in 25.44 finished just in front of Dawn McDonald and Fiona Jardine. Norman Neilson, wearing his santa suit was down on his usual time in 29.54 but was given a big cheer as he crossed the line. June Scott was actually the first across the line but was so far ahead of her own prediction that her excellent debut meant that she was unfortunately the back marker in the handicap.

Over coffee and mince pies at Dumfries Sports Club, prizes were given out and the club places for the 2018 London marathon were awarded to Alan Baxter and Skye Sarahs. Hopefully both will realise that this means that they will have to do a lot of training over the coming months!
