Tinto Hill Race

17/11/2017

On Saturday 11th November 2017 nine members of Dumfries Running Club joined the field of 244 in tackling the Tinto Hill race in Lanarkshire.

As a prominent landmark easily visible from the M74 the 710 metre high hill has a well marked path which is reckoned to take 2 to 3 hours for walkers to cover the near 5 mile journey to the summit and back. Naturally, for hill runners the race was completed well within that time frame.

Climbing steeply from the off, many were forced to walk for large sections as the shale path gave way to boggy and marshy ground. With few opportunities to get up to any kind of speed there was an added discouragement on the harder sections as the front runners came bounding past showing that nimble footwork, sheer speed and confidence over the terrain is the secret to success. The race winner Murray Strain completed the course in a scarcely believable thirty two minutes.

The fastest club runner and the 2017 club hill race champion was Adam Dickie in 43rd place overall in 38.58, five places and almost a minute in front of female champion Jo Zakrzewski. Simon Mortlock in 42.30 was less than 100 metres in front of Craig Malcolmson and Seb Pflanz in 47.57 was a minute in front of Ranjit Thomas with club captain Sue Jeffrey close behind in 50.10. David Burns ran well in 54.25 as did Laura Broatch who was delighted to get back in under the hour mark.
