Dark Skies 14

28/10/2017

Four runners from Dumfries running club, Norman Neilson, David Burns, Laura Broatch and Jody Dempster joined 75 others in the inaugural Dark Skies 14 mile race, starting at the lovely local cafe at Kirroughtee in the Galloway Forest.

With the forecast storm Brian still not too bad, waterproofs and headtorches were adorned for a 6.30pm start. The first three miles were on good tracks, then veering off onwards and forever upwards finally reaching Murray's monument, where you had to get yourself a black or pink Trail Outlaws bracelet to prove you'd made this climb, which is not so easy in the dark. Back onto the path and a short steep hill took you back onto a good trail decent eventually retracing the first 3 miles to the finish. A tough little race that actually covered 15 miles and 1500ft ascent, well organised and the cafe stayed open until 1am for runners. Finishing 4th overall and 1st V50 was Norman in 2hrs5mins. Jody was 23rd in 2hrs48mins followed closely by Laura and David in 26/27th.
