Dalbeattie Hardrock Challenge

19/10/2017

Now in its 14th year, the hardrock challenge has matured into a real highlight of the sporting calendar and attracts runners and riders from all over eager to test themselves in a very tough event.

The initial part is a 10 mile run on forest trails combined with a highly technical 16 miles on the mountain bike with more than its fair share of difficult descents, tricky climbs and hazards.

13 members of Dumfries Running Club took part in the running section and only Adam Dickie and Craig Malcolmson, using his local knowledge were up for the challenge of the mountain biking. The fastest run of all came from Richard Beck who was second in the running section in 62.47 and Alan Baxter in 64.01 used his racing experience to hold off Kevin McQueen by thirty seconds as he himself was two strides ahead of first woman Lisa Finlay. Charlie Storrie continued his return to good form in 66.23 and Sandy Shankland and Craig Malcolmson, in the coffin dodgers team combined with Sandy’s run in 69.43 to cross the line in 2 hours 27 mins.

Adam Dickie was the only solo DRC competitor and he started well with a run in 70.55 and continued to the end in 2 hours 49. Norman Neilson ran well on home turf in 73.35 and was almost a minute in front of Ranjit Thomas with David Burns in 77.15. Sue Jeffrey and Alison McKean both competed well with Sue in 85.37 less than 50 metres in front of Alison.
