Ben Nevis Hill Race

04/09/2017

This year 5 DRC members assembled on the start line at New Town Park Fort William along with around 500 others for the annual slog up & down the UK's highest peak.

As usual the runners are paraded round the Park to the start line by Lochaber junior pipe band, the runners were sent on their way in glorious sunshine.

Adam Dickie on his 1st outing on the Ben showed the way to the rest of DRC guys with a strong climb on the ascent reaching the top in around 1:30hrs,  then made a safe descent back to the finish in a time of 2hrs 20m.

Next was Craig Malcolmson making his comeback on the hills after a serious leg injury which had sidelined him for 4months, so with no hill miles in the legs & only getting the ok to run the week before set off with no expectations other the to dodge the cut of points on the way & finish within the allocated 3h:15m, So with no thrills other than falling hard 20 metres into the descent, Craig was delighted to cross the finishing line in 2hrs 35m.

James Kellock, another 1st time Ben'er was next & acquitted himself well considering he only got a substitute entry 4weeks earlier & with minimum hill training managed to complete the race in 2hrs 53m no mean feat !

Then came the Problem Child in the Shape of Ranjit Thomas! for someone that's supposed to be well educated you would think he'd pay more attention to his footwear, I swear he must hunt rubbish bins for other people's cast off's such was the state of his running shoes, anyway enough said, he still managed up & down nearly catching James in a  time of 2hrs 54m.

Then last but not least came Mo Khan who had a disastrous race caused by some bad route choices, Mo wasn't firing on all cylinders on the ascent due to the heat, then on the descent decided he would try a different route back to New Town Park by coming over Meall an T from the half way lochan to the finish, this proved to be a bad mistake but as Mo pointed out at least I gave it a go. Mo finished in PW of 3hrs 11m. Never mind always next year.

The race was won for the 8th conscutive year by Lochabers King o the Ben Finlay Wild in an incredible time of 1hr 31m nearly 6 minutes ahead of his nearest challenger.
