Doonhamer 10k

31/08/2017

This event last Sunday morning, well organised by Dumfries Harriers, has developed into a popular race attracting local runners of all standards.

This year it was selected as the Dumfries Running Club championship event with the fastest club male and female runners gaining a trophy at the annual dinner dance in the New Year. Competition at the sharp end of the field therefore was very keen and for several others the challenge of completing their first ever 10k brought plenty of motivation for the 32 club runners able to get a place in the field.

The race was won by former DRC runner Mark Hall of Otley in 36.19 and the winner of the club championships was Richard Beck who was second overall in 36.36. Niall Campbell had the consolation of finishing as first over 35 man in third place in 37.03, fourteen seconds ahead of Nicola Hood who was first woman in 4th. Alan Baxter was the first vet 40 in 37.25 and Kevin McCaig had an excellent run in 8th as third over 50 in 38.08.

Graeme Beckett ran well in 39.46 and was twenty seconds ahead of Simon Mortlock who had a strong run finishing twenty seconds ahead of first over 60 man Sandy Shankland and a further 30 seconds ahead of Stuart Gillespie. David Burns had a good run in 42.36, two minutes in front of Anne Macfarlane who was first woman over 50. Craig Kerr in 46.22 was pleased to finish twenty seconds ahead of Mark Hall.

Andy Davis in 51.23 was almost a minute in front of Laura Broatch and Hamish Macdonald in 53.20 edged a minute ahead of Susan Callander and a further 60 seconds in front of Sean McGleenan. Karen Littlejohn in 57.25 ran much of the way with Karen Scott and only pulled a few metres ahead in the final stages. Claire Campbell ran well in 58.29, narrowly in front of Lesley McCallay who is in serious training for the Great North Run. Donald Anson  in 59 mins was just in front of Gemma Leadbetter who thoroughly enjoyed her first race since giving birth earlier in the year. Margaret Laurie was pleased to get under the hour mark in 59.46.

Benefitting from the Monday night running group and the Thursday evening speedplay were Trish Murphy and Pamela Slater who crossed the line in 61.32, narrowly in front of Rhiannon Breed and Amanda Gibson with Louise Craig in close attendance. Lynne Wilson and Mhairi Davidson also ran well and were thoroughly delighted to complete such a personal milestone.
