West Highland Way Relay Race

02/07/2017

On Saturday 24th June, 3 teams from Dumfries Running Club took on the mighty West Highland Way Midsummer Relay Race running from Tyndrum to Fort William in 3 legs.

The teams were DRC ladies (Hazel Smyth, Sue Jeffrey and Alison McKean), DRC men (Charlie Storrie, Ranjit Thomas and Bob Quin) and No sugar sheep (Fiona Jardine, Jody Dempster and Laura Broatch). This race was to be ran in conjunction with the full West Highland Way race, which had started in Milngavie at 1am.

Hazel, Charlie and Fiona were the first runners to take on the 17.5 miles leg when the 45 strong pack left Tyndrum on the stroke of midday. This section was relatively flat for the first 6 miles to Bridge of Orchy, then with undulating terrain ranging from single track steep climbs to rocky descents, road and really hurts your feet on the cobbled track for the remaining miles to Glencoe ski centre. With only a minute separating them at Bridge of Orchy Charlie was just ahead of Hazel and by the time they reached Glencoe it wasn't any different. Fiona had a great run, coming in looking weather beaten as the weather had taken a turn for the worse, a short time behind them.

Leg 2 was taken up by Ranjit Thomas, Sue Jeffrey and Jody Dempster, with the Devil’s Staircase between them and Kinlochleven. This covered 1750ft of accent and around 2800ft of descent over 10.5 miles on very rocky technical terrain for the most part, to be made even more difficult by rain and gruelling headwinds for the first 4 miles. This was eased slightly by the bemusement of signs for a 'shop' as you climbed the Devil’s Staircase, and yes there was one, but none of the runners had money!! Ranjit was just ahead of Sue at the checkpoint in Kinlochleven, with Jody not losing a lot of ground, even when managing to get slightly lost, taking a couple of selfies and trying to descend into the finish head first.

The last leg between Kinlochleven and the finish at Fort William was ran by Bob Quin, Alison McKean and Laura Broatch. This started with a tough climb at the start with 14 more miles of very undulating track and with over 2000ft of ascent this was no easy run! Normally quite a good runnable section, this was made difficult by the rivers running across it and the rain and headwinds endured when exposed up on Lairig Mor.

DRC ladies were the first of our teams to cross the finish line in 6hrs 41, and took 2nd female team and 11th place overall. DRC men came 18th overall in a time of 7hrs 02. No sugar sheep held it together well to cross the finish line in 8hrs 02, coming 32nd of 45!

A great time was had by all on this well organised and marshalled race.

Thanks to all who supported the runners

Jody Dempster
