Gelston 5 Mile

27/07/2017

As one of the most anticipated races of the year for Dumfries Running Club members, 39 took part in the 5 mile road race that was being run in connection with the Civic Week.

Whilst this was a very good turnout it was slightly down on last year’s record breaking total. There were at least 10 other club members out on the course, supporting and helping and in addition a good proportion of the finishing crowd were friends and family of DRC members which gave an added impetus to tired runners.

Expertly organised in a laid back style by Dougie Milligan and Bob Green, the race starts at the caravan park and circumnavigates Carlingwark Loch with a run to Gelston and a return via Threave Gardens leading back to Castle Douglas with a finish at the park.

At the sharp end of the field, Richard Beck retained his title in 28.38 and Niall Campbell was pleased to finish third in 29.12, a few seconds faster than last year and Alan Baxter, first woman Lisa Finlay and Kevin McQueen were the seven of the 128 finishers who were under the six minute mile benchmark.

Kevin McCaig in 30.16 was five seconds in front of Graeme Cross and Simon Mortlock kept up his usual steady speed in 32.05. David Burns had a strong run in 33.05 a few strides in front of Franc Karpo. Sandy Shankland in 33.23 was narrowly in front of Stuart Gillespie with Hazel Smyth and Mike Jardine both glad to be under the 34minute mark.

Les Hill in 34.33 was thirty seconds ahead of Anne Macfarlane who gained a PB in 35 mins having overtaken Stephen Mohan in the second half of the race. Mark Hall ran well in 35.57, thirty seconds in front of the trio of Craig Kerr, Neil Moffat and Sue Jeffrey who had a race for the line.

Andy Davies had a good run and was pleased to dip under the 8 minute mile mark by one second, a minute in front of Skye Sarahs and Laura Broatch had an outstanding run in 42.47 fully a mile and a half faster than last year. Bob Quin was pleased to finish in 42.58 a minute in front of the trio of Karen Littlejohn, Andy Dickson and Rab Wilson.

Helen Steele ran well in 45.50, two minutes in front of Peter Hutchison and a resurgent Donald Anson had his usual fast finish in 48.12 alongside Louise Craig, who was three minutes up from last year, narrowly in front of Rhiannon Breed and Trish Murphy. Steph Grier and Claire Campbell finished together in 51.09 just in front of Anne Hutchison with Mhairi Davidson a few minutes behind.

Margaret Gray did her usual supportive job as the official race sweeper to help and encourage less confident runners to reach the finishing line
