Lakeland Trails Series - Coniston

07/06/2017

The latest in the popular Lakeland Trails Series took place in Coniston on Sunday 4th June and 6 members of Dumfries Running Club took part in either the full or half marathon.

The weather was relatively cool and clear on the Sunday morning for the start of the Marathon challenge at 7am and Laura Broatch, Jody Dempster and Andy Dickson, all having camped nearby overnight, set off with over 200 other competitors. The route took the runners through Coniston then headed north for about 5 miles before looping back down between Coniston and Hawkshead with a lap of Tarn Hows thrown in for good measure. The race then climbed into the treeline on the east of Coniston Water then round the bottom of the lake before a relatively flat finish at the race headquarters. The race had over 3200 feet of climbing.

Laura and Jody, who were competing in their first marathon distance event, ran at an even pace for the whole race and crossed the line together in a time of 5 hours 52 minutes to finish 129/130th out of 214 finishers. Andy who had been struggling from about 16 miles completed the run in 6 hours 17 minutes to place 165th

The Half Marathon challenge started at the more reasonable time of 10am with Saty Burns and Carol Graham taking part for DRC. Neil Moffat took part in the Half Marathon race which started at 11am. The Half Marathon route was 90% the same as the first half of the Marathon with the runners heading straight back to Coniston rather than looping round Coniston Water. Neil finished in 2 hours 2 minutes in the race event which placed him 92nd out of 167 finishers. Carol finished the challenge event in a time of 2 hours 21 minutes to place 180th. Saty finished in 2 hours 35 minutes, one week after setting a PB at the Kirkcudbright Half Marathon, to finish 251st out of 370 finishers.
