Edinburgh Marathon Festival

01/06/2017

On the weekend of the 27th and 28th May 8 members of DRC took part in different events as part of Edinburgh Marathon Festival (EMF) 2017.

These were the 5K, half marathon and marathon. There are also a 10k and various different junior races on offer.

On the Saturday, Fiona Jardine and Kerry Jardine did the 5K, in 28m 13s and 28 m 14s, prior to both doing the half marathon on the Sunday.

Both the half and the full marathon courses start in central Edinburgh and finish in Musselburgh. They both involve a loop back through Musselburgh so that from approximately mile 10 some of us could see the runners going in the opposite direction and close to finishing! Although both courses are fairly flat and fast, the heat made it challenging at times. In the half marathon Niall Campbell was first to finish for the club in 1h 21m, in 79th position overall. He held sub-6 min miles for the first 11 miles but then “struggled” in the heat. Hazel Smyth finished 10th in her age category, in 1hr 36m and was using the half towards her marathon training. Fiona and Kerry Jardine ran together, finishing in 2h 5m. Kerry was pleased to knock 9 minutes off her time from last year. Claire Campbell was pleased to finish her first half marathon in 2h 21m, and Jacqueline Wilson and Susan Graham ran together and finished in 3h 14m and 3h 15m (with Susan having waited at the beginning for Jacqueline so they could run together).

During the marathon, the heat had increased further, and Diana Lord was pleased to come 6th in her age group with a time of 5hrs 8 mins which should allow her to qualify for London.
