This race, held on Tuesday May the 9th attracted a superb entry of 151, just short of the record breaking total, for a well organised 5 mile race on rural roads on the outskirts of Dumfries.

Organised for the first time by David and Saty Burns backed up by a whole host of helpers from Dumfries Running Club the race went well and allowed many local runners to measure their progress and get an accurate idea of their early season form.

On a warm evening the race was won by former Dumfries Running Club member Mickey Breen now running for Corstorphine AC in Edinburgh in 26.45, twenty one seconds faster than last year, for his fifth victory in the past seven years. Richard Beck of the host club was second in 27.44 with Ross Bark third male senior in 28.51. The first junior male was Ewan Fairgrieve who underlined his growing promise with an outstanding run in third place overall in 28.35. Ross Acklam also had an excellent run as second junior man in 12th place in 30.05. The first male vet was Andrew Stevenson of Dumfries Harriers who was one of ten runners who beat the half hour in 29.57. Kevin McCaig of the host club was the first over 50 runner in 30.35 and the first over 60 male was Franc Karpo of Dumfries RC in 34.08.The winning male team was Richard Beck, Niall Campbell and Graeme Cross all of Dumfries Running Club.

In the womens race Nicola Hood of Dumfries RC retained her title in 29.12, well over a minute faster than last year with Donna Burnett of Dalbeattie second in 33.46 and third senior female Melanie Martin, also of Dalbeattie, in 34.32. The first junior female was Iona Kerr of Dumfries Harriers in 34.24 and she was almost a minute in front of first vet female Vicky Armstrong of Dumfries tri club in 35.20. The first supervet female was Angela McDonald of jog Scotland in 44.45 and Liz Dawson of ADAC had an excellent run in her age category in 41.32. The winning team was the Dumfries RC trio of Nicola Hood, Skye Sarahs and Paula Craven.

As a result of the excellent conditions many runners were able to put in some very good performances . There was a healthy turnout of club runners from Dumfries Harriers, ADAC, Dalbeattie Running Club, Dumfries tri club and from further afield which enhanced the event and added to the competition. Thanks are due to Dumfries Sports Club for hosting the event and the prize giving and to John McQueen’s engravers of Galloway Street for their sponsorship of the race and to Scottish Water for keeping the runners hydrated on a warm evening.
