Screel Hill Race 2017

Screel Hill Race

11/04/2017

On Saturday 8th April, the first of the weekends two Grand Prix Races took place on Screel Hill.

This is the slightly shorter and slightly dryer of the two hill races that club members participate in each year in the local area. On this occasion 6 club members took part.

Conditions on the day were dry and cool for the start at one o’ clock and as with the Criffel race a few weeks previously a number of very good hill runners from around Scotland were on the start line.

The race does not have an easy start with a sharp climb all the way from the start line up to the cairn at the top of the hill. From there a short section downhill offers false hope before the runners are cruelly asked to climb back up before a last fast downhill section on the fire road all the way to the finish line.

The first Dumfries Running Club member down the hill was Screel debutant Graham Beckett in a time of 41.14 followed 8 seconds later by Jo Zakrzewski in 41.22, having swapped her cycling cleats for trail shoes to take the 1st Lady prize. The next Dumfries runner was Ranjit Thomas in 48.27 just in front of Sue Jeffrey in 48.41 avenging his defeat in the recent Criffel hill race. Laura Broatch and Saty Burns who were attempting their first hill race crossed the line in 68.45 having thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

The overall winner of the race by almost two minutes was Annan and District junior Ewan Fairgrieve. Definitely a name to watch for.
