Christmas Handicap 2016

19/12/2016

The highlight of the festive running calendar, the Dumfries Running Club Christmas handicap, was held last Sunday morning on the 5 mile Holywood Stroll course.

In its 30th year the race attracted a smaller than usual turnout of 24 club members eager to see if they could match up to their own targets as each entrant set their own start time and ran without any form of timing device.

As well as this turnout 7 other club members were marshalling and recording the finishing times to make sure the event would go ahead with others offering on course support. Each entrant provided a wrapped Christmas present and this provided an extra incentive to push on to try for the best possible time.

Keeping with tradition it was a new name on the trophy as Robyn Langton and Laura Broatch rose to the occasion to become the first ever joint winners of the event as each was one second under their estimated time for the course. Those who were faster than their anticipated time had only a short time to feel pleased with themselves but were not going to win the overall prize. Newcomer Rob Wynne was the first back in a time of 31.45 but was over three minutes ahead of his prediction as was second placed finisher Sian Finlay. Skye Sarahs in 45.31 was third and managed to stay ahead of fast finishing Kevin Conchar who completed the course in 30.24. Carol Graham and Joyce Hamilton in 53.30 were narrowly in front of Dan Alexander and Ranjit Thomas.

In his debut club race Andy Davies did well in 44.22 and managed to hold off fast finishing Kevin McCaig. Ryan McCrindle and Sandy Shankland ran a cautious race in 39.35 as both are in recovery after recent injuries. Anne Macfarlane and Stuart Gillespie both had positive runs and were ahead of the eventual handicap winners Laura Broatch and Robyn Langton. Diana Lord had a good run in 47.15 as did Mark Johnston who was narrowly in front of Kerry and Fiona Jardine in 50.46. Alison McKean put in a superb performance in 37.01 as the second fastest woman but narrowly missed out on her aim of gaining a bronze standard time. Charlie Storrie had the second fastest time of 31.11 and overtook a tiring Stephen Mohan before the end. Sean McGleenan managed to go off course and was several minutes behind expectations but was encouraged to the line by his clubmates.

Back at Dumfries Sports Club at Nunholm, prizes were given out over coffee and mince pies and the discretionary club places for the London marathon were awarded to Sian Finlay and Mark Hall.
