Masters International Cross Country

15/11/2016

On a weekend when many Scottish sports fans were disappointed, 3 DRC members made the trip up to Tollcross Park for the Masters International Cross Country Race.

This is contested between England, Ireland, Scotland , Wales and Northern Ireland on a yearly basis with the venue rotating round all the competing nations. The women (4 in a team and 3 to score) race over 6k, while the men (6 in a team with 4 scoring) go an extra 2k, with teams being made up of 5 year age brackets from 35 upwards.

The first race was for all the ladies and the men aged 65 and up. Jo Zakrzewski found the distance rather short and the speed rather fast and furious, but found that others faded more than her so she was able to make up several positions in the latter stages of the race. She finished as second team counter in 21:30 with her V40 team gaining the silver medals.

Next up were the 3 men's age groups from 50-64 and this race featured Jim Buchanan. He was also the second team counter for his V50 team, finishing in 27:31, over two minutes quicker than his time in the trial race.

In the afternoon there was an open race and, as a reserve for the v50 team, Anne Macfarlane was invited to take part. She finished in 13th position in a time of 26:18, up on her 26:54 from the trial race.

As three DRC members represented the host nation this year, can we hope that there will be three other DRC members running on home turf next year when the event moves back to Northern Ireland?
