Dalbeattie Hardrock Challenge

05/10/2016

Now in its 13th year, the Dalbeattie Hardrock Challenge has matured into a real highlight of the sporting calendar and attracts runners and riders from all over eager to test themselves in a very tough event.

The initial part is a 10 mile run on forest trails combined with a highly technical 16 miles on the mountain bike with more than its fair share of difficult descents, tricky climbs and hazards.

15 members of Dumfries Running Club took part in the running section and only Craig Malcolmson, using his local knowledge was up for the challenge of the mountain biking. The fastest run of all came from Richard Beck who won the running section in 59.52, over two minutes ahead of his 2015 time and Kevin McQueen outlined his recent good form in second place in 64.45, a minute ahead of Alan Baxter who himself was less than 100metres in front of first woman Lisa Finlay.

Adam Dickie had a typically strong run in 67.18 in 7th, six places and two and a half minutes ahead of Simon Mortlock while Graeme Cross in 72.09 managed to stay less than half a minute in front of Norman Neilson who trains regularly on the route. Ranjit Thomas was pleased with his run in 73.51 which was narrowly in front of Allan Manson. Craig Malcolmson ran conservatively on home terrain in 76.13 and had enough energy to complete the cycle section to finish overall in less than three hours. David Burns had a solid run in 78.21, twenty seconds in front of Ryan McCrindle in his first race since his recent Oslo marathon. Alison McKean had a good run in 82.33 as did Sandie Donald as part of the glitter and mud team in 98.08.
