Coniston Trail

10/10/2016

Starting and finishing in Coniston Hall on the West bank of Coniston Water, the Coniston Trail afforded wonderful views of Coniston Water, the surrounding fells and Grizedale in the distance.

Underfoot conditions on the course were very unpredictable with some rugged & slippery sections which were not helped by over 600 competitors in both the Race & the Challenge pounding over the course.

The first 3 miles was a gradual climb passing through the Coppermines before the course took a steep climb, until crossing Low Water Beck and passing below Grey Crag where navigating the single track sections was down to walking pace.

The course descended down through Old Slate Mines and then onto The Walna Scar Road, where great views of Coniston Water were given, before descending towards Torver and then onto the shore of Coniston Water where the gathered crowds were waiting to cheer the finishers over the line.

About 500 yards from the finish line a wee surprise awaited the unsuspecting runners. They had to navigate a small stream that was waist deep, for Jo Johnstone and only knee deep for Andy, where a cheering crowd were urging on the runners to “just go for it”.

The sounds of cheering spectators and the Steel Drum Band awaited the finishers.

The first DRC runner to cross the finish line and complete the Trail Challenge was Richard Pagan in 1:46 followed by Andy Dickson in 1:50 then Jo Johnstone in 1:51

Kerry Willacy & Jacqueline Wilson were next to finish in 2:33 & 2:52 respectively.

Another fantastic trail run, that was enjoyed by all.
