Scottish Masters Cross Country Trial

19/09/2016

Jim Buchanan and Anne Macfarlane entered the Scottish Masters Trial Race ran on Saturday 17th September at Tollcross Park, Glasgow.

The format for selection is as follows; in the M35-39, M40-44, M45-49 and M50-54 age groups the first three finishers will be selected with an additional three being selected on known form. Similarly in the remaining men’s age groups and all the women’s teams the first two finishers will be selected along with a further two on known form. The annual British and Irish Masters Cross Country International will also be run at Tollcross on November 12th.

Anne recalls her experience – “Weather wise, it couldn't have been a better day for this race. Traffic wise not so much! An accident on the M74, a long slow diversion and then roadworks meant the journey from Dumfries took us 2and a half hours - just as well we'd left early intending a stop for coffee on the way. As a novice (unless you count once a year at school more than 30 years ago) I was nervous, but the Scottish Veteran Harriers seem like really nice people and they went out of their way to be friendly. At £2 (£5 for non members) it might also be the cheapest race I've ever done.

Tollcross park is lovely, and a great place for a cross country run. The 2k course was mostly grass but crossed over Tarmac walking paths several times, where the organisers had made spike-friendly crossing places from pieces of carpet. And although it was a fine sunny day, the ground was still soft. An over 65 man (they print your age band on your race number) had advised me before the start to try out both spikes and trail shoes on one of the slopes and there was no doubt the spikes were better. The route was laid out cleverly taking the most advantage of all the hills to fit in the maximum amount of climbing and as the laps went on the many hills somehow got steeper and longer! Our race was 3 loops of the course.

I don't think I've ever been in a race where so many of the participants went out so fast, it was a bit daunting! The pace didn't let up so I hung on the best I could and somehow finished 4th in the age group - not fast enough for an automatic place but not slow enough to be definitely out. The teams will be announced in 2 weeks. The International is on 12th November and there will also be an open race on the day, I'd recommend anyone who's available to consider giving it a try.”

Jim came into the race having missed several weeks training due to intensive work commitments and then a chest infection. The week prior to the race allowed some easy running, and a physio session to ensure full range of movement to ensure good running form.

Jim planned a canny race plan to stalk the lead runners in his v50 age category, although the plan almost fell apart with having to track a blistering downhill start. Through lap one Jim gradually caught up with the first and second v50, then stalked the first across lap two. Lap three Jim eased away and concentrated on economical running form at threshold, and this saw him home in 29.39, first v50 and 32nd place overall. Each lap was an accurately measured 2k, giving a race distance of 8k.
