Kyles 10 Miles

12/09/2016

The race website advertised route description is - “The first 6 miles are hilly and challenging, then flattening out for the last 4 miles.”

Les Hill likes a challenge so decided to give this one a go and after the race was heard saying “that it certainly was very challenging.”

Les had entered this one with a target of trying to get below 70 minutes and knew that would be tough as only eleven runners had achieved that in the 2015 race.

The event takes place in the Secret Coast area of Argyll with the start in Tighnabruaich and the finish in nearby Kames after completing an anti-clockwise, and very scenic, circuit.

The race started at noon on a warm sunny day with the first mile climbing from the start line. When Les reached the mile marker in 7.26, and lying in 20th place, he knew it would be hard work to get under 70 minutes.

He didn’t panic though as he expected mile times to vary with the undulations and found this to be the case. By mile three he had moved in to 15th place and his time at that point showed 20 minutes 55 seconds.

He noted his time of 34.31 at the half way point and believed he would break seventy minutes as long as the course description was correct regarding the last four miles being flat.

With confidence he pushed on and ran the second half exactly one minute faster, 33.31 to gain another three places and finish 12th, out of 216 starters, in 68 minutes 02 seconds.

Despite this being a tougher course than the two other 10 miles races he has done this year it was his fastest of the three showing that his good form and improving times are continuing.
