Dumfries Half Marathon

25/09/2016

Last Sunday saw the 35th running of the Dumfries half marathon, which doubled as the 2016 west district championship race.

Organised by Mark Johnston and Alan Baxter of Dumfries Running Club, at least 50 of their club mates were working hard behind the scenes and along the course to make sure the event went smoothly. With reasonable weather with only one rain shower and a headwind in the early stages the runners were able to focus on the race itself.

At the blast of the horn from the start at Dumfries and Galloway College the runners were led by a contingent from Dumfries and Galloway blood bikers who were the 2016 charity partners. After heading towards Bankend before climbing past the Dovecotewell animal rescue centre with superb views over to Criffel, the runners returned via Glencaple and the tricky climb back close to Bankend. The final four miles saw the runners retrace their steps with a welcome final downhill mile back to the College.

The race was retained by Kerry Liam Wilson of Cambuslang in 74.24, over two minutes down on 2015 and he finished less than a minute ahead of Craig Reid of Bellahouston with Connell Drummond of Kilmarnock Harriers a further three minutes behind. As well as prizes for the race, gold silver and bronze medals were handed over on behalf of Scottish Athletics. The first woman in the race was Lisa Finlay of the host club in 6th place overall in 84.23 with Ann Robin of Bellahouston four minutes behind and Lindsay Walker of Keswick third in 93mins.

The first male and female team prizes were won by Bellahouston harriers but the trios of Kevin Conchar, Kevin McCaig and Les Hill and Lisa and Sian Finlay and Fiona Jardine of the host club were in second place. In the local category first prizes went to Kevin Conchar and Lisa Finlay.

As always the race is about so much more than the sharp end of the field with many competitors commenting on the superb support on course and the encouragement given to those striving to do their best as well as the excellent facilities at Dumfries and Galloway college. Thanks are also due to Grierson and Graham, Rowan Glen, Hollinger Scott, Bookitzone.com as well as Armstrong waste management and Thomson foodservice for their help and support. Thanks are also due to Dumfries sea cadets and Solway skating club who both provided a superb service on route and at the finish and especially to Dumfries Town Band who entertained spectators and competitors before, during and after the race.
