Clyde Stride 40 Miles Ultra Marathon

22/07/2016

Les Hill secured a late entry for the Clyde Stride and set off on Saturday morning from Partick train station to follow the river to New Lanark in this 40 miles race.

He has done this race twice before so knew what lay ahead. The route is a fairly gentle climb upriver until hitting the sting in the tail with ten miles to go as the route climbs and descends through the Clyde valley.

The first section to check point one at Cambuslang is all on tarmac and Les held a steady pace to reach it in 76 minutes. The next section varies between rough ground and road to take the runners to Strathclyde Park and check point two that he reached in 2 hours 43 minutes for a total of 18 miles. Les was happy with this as he felt comfortable and knew his time was similar to his previous two attempts. He continued confidently and started overtaking others who were sometimes walking while he kept to a trot and reached the last check point, with twelve miles to go, in 4 hours 17. After this final refuelling he set off hoping he could maintain his form over this hardest section with the steep climbs. He took strength from the knowledge the end was near and was pleased to finish in 6 hours and 12 minutes.
