Kirkcudbright Half Marathon and Beeches Run 2016

01/06/2016

The past few years have seen hot sunny conditions for the Kirkcudbright Half Marathon, and this year, the 33rd edition held last Saturday, was no exception.

16 Dumfries Running Club members joined the field of 199 over the half marathon distance with others completing the 11.2K Beeches run, while yet more were out on the course offering much appreciated encouragement.

The course is a testing undulating one, with a short sharp hill in Twynholm. There is no chance to let tired legs fade at the end as the last couple of miles are rather exposed along the High Street into Kirkcudbright. This year there were added extra difficulties with the sheer volume of traffic along the coast road in the early section and halfway round runners had to pass through a haze of smoke from a farm blaze.

The half marathon was won by Mark Hall of Otley, a former DRC member, in 78.37 and the best club performer was Kevin McQueen who had an excellent run in 6th in 82.03. First woman was Lisa Finlay in 8th place in 82.50, twenty five seconds in front of Kevin McCaig with Richard Beck in 85.52 finding the warm conditions to be a real challenge and Les Hill kept up his recent excellent form with a very positive 89.06 in 15th place. In a three way contest throughout the race, Ranjit Thomas was 34th overall in 97.57 a few strides in front of David Burns with Stephen Mohan fading to finish 40 seconds adrift.

Alison McKean and Sue Jeffrey ran well in 107mins and won the womens team prize along with Lisa Finlay. In training for longer events, both warmed down by completing the 11k route immediately after the half marathon. Newcomer Stuart Gillespie completed his first half marathon in 111mins and Bob Quin found the conditions to be challenging in 123mins, a minute in front of Michelle McCrindle. Margaret Laurie found the course to be especially difficult in the heat and was relieved to finish in 156mins. The biggest cheer of all came for Laura Broatch and her sister Jody Dempster  who completed their debut half marathons and were encouraged across the line by their club mates.

Beeches 11k

This younger sibling event has been in place for a decade now and has become a welcome addition to the local running calendar. Starting a few minutes after the half marathon the course includes the Twynholm hill and the long run in through Kirkcudbright town centre and 113 took part. Running under the name of his second claim club, the race was won by David Parrish in 41.41 with Franc Karpo underlining his recent resurgence in 7th in 44.38. In his first club race of the year Rab Wilson enjoyed his run in 66mins as did Donald Anson who prepared well for the challenge in 80.28.
