This race, held on Tuesday May the 10th attracted a superb entry of 156, just short of the record breaking total, for a well organised 5 mile race on rural roads on the outskirts of Dumfries.

Organised expertly as usual by Sandy and Linda Shankland, backed up by a whole host of helpers from Dumfries Running Club the race went well and allowed many local runners to measure their progress and get an accurate idea of their early season form.

On an exceptionally warm evening the race was won by former Dumfries Running Club member Mickey Breen in 27.06, now running for Corstorphine AC in Edinburgh, for his fourth victory in the past six years. Last year’s champion David Sloan was second in 28.29 with Dumfries Running Club’s Richard Beck only two seconds behind. The first male vet was Adrian Leach of Galloway Harriers in 29.38, a time which placed him three seconds ahead of the first junior man Rory Graham of Houghton Harriers. This was the first time in a decade that the first junior man has finished as close to the highest placed male runners. Kevin McCaig of the host club ran well in 30.09 as the first over 50 man and the first over 60 male was Franc Karpo of DRC had an excellent run in 32.35 which placed him five seconds in front of race organiser Sandy Shankland. The first male team was the DRC trio of Richard Beck, Jacob Tangey and Kevin McQueen.

In the womens race there was a very close competition between Nicola Hood and Ruth Joss of Shettleston with Nicola in 30.47 winning by only three seconds. Donna Burnett of Dalbeattie was third in 34.11.The first vet 45 was Sian Finlay in 34.34, with the first over 35 vet, Vicky Armstrong of Dumfries and Galloway tri club, in 36.22. The first junior female was Emma Kerr of ADAC in 37.26 and the first over 55 female was Janet Priestley of ADAC in 38.55. The DRC trio of Sian Finlay, Anne Macfarlane and Sue Jeffrey were the fastest female team.

As a result of the high temperatures many runners were slower than their expected times. However despite this there was a healthy turnout of club runners from Dumfries Harriers, ADAC, Dalbeattie Running Club, Galloway Harriers and the new Kirkcudbright running club which enhanced the event and added to the competition.

Thanks are due to Dumfries Sports Club for hosting the event and the prize giving and to John McQueen’s engravers of Galloway Street for their sponsorship of the race and to Scottish Water for keeping the runners hydrated on a warm evening.
