Galloway Hillbilly Duathlon 2016

20/05/2016

On Sunday 4 DRC members travelled West to take part in the increasingly popular Galloway Hillbilly Duathlon.

This is similar in format to the Dalbeattie Hardrock event and consists of a 10k trail run and 10 mile mountain bike trail.  It's not an easy course by any stretch of the imagination.  Craig Malcolmson who is no stranger to the Galloway forest trails took on the event as an individual as did Donald Chalmers; whilst Alan Baxter and Adam Dickie entered the pairs with team mates Will Voce and Steven Todd.  There was a great crowd at the start/finish and plenty of marshalls to help encourage participants on the way round and for the pairs the incentive of giving the riders a good chance ensured there was no let up in pace.

First finished the run was Alan Baxter in a time of 42:29 nearly two minutes quicker than 2015 (albeit without the same de-tour as 2015), Alan handed over to Will in third place and as first in the vet 40 team category.  Will built on this and took a minute off his previous time ensuring the team where first v40 team with a new course record of 1:36:22 and just holding off the 2nd vet 40's by 18 seconds.  Adam had a solid run on his way back from an illness and handed over to Steven in 11th place.  Unfortunately Steven had a mechanical (bikers talk) and didn't do as well as hoped, the pair finished in 21st position.

The star of the day was perhaps Craig Malcolmson who had a typically solid run coming in just under 50mins....this was followed by an astonishing ride making light work of the hills and obstacles along the way to record a time of 58:05 which was the 3rd fastest of all individuals on the day.  Craig smashed the v50 course record by over three minutes in a time of 1:47:55 and was rightly pleased to take to the podium.  Joining Craig on in the solo event was Donald Chalmers who had a solid run and very respectable ride to finish with a time of 2:15:15 in 32nd position.

All four enjoyed the event and the chance to catch up with their fellow runners and mountain bike riders.  The post race cups of tea where enjoyed whilst plans for next year and other forthcoming duathlons where laid....a great event well worth a try next year!
