London Marathon 2016

27/04/2016

Last Sunday two members of Dumfries Running Club joined 40,000 others plus millions watching live on TV for the Virgin London marathon

With so many wishing to take part entry is very difficult and only Kevin Conchar had managed to get through the selection ballot. He was joined by male club captain Alan Baxter and Joyce Hamilton had gained the two discretionary places. Sadly Alan was forced to defer his place so only Kevin and Joyce were able to take part.

Starting fast Kevin reached the 10k in under 40 mins and halfway in 83mins, close to the time he would manage for a half marathon and as he got to 30k in under 2 hours he was confident of a strong performance. Kevin managed to keep this fast pace going till 23 miles but found the final miles a real challenge but held to cross the line in 2 hours 56mins in 1361st place which put him well into the top 5% of the field.

Joyce was thoroughly delighted to be awarded a club place, especially as the race was on her birthday and she used the event as a chance to raise money for Macmillan cancer support. Her pre- race preparation on the Saturday after registration at the expo involved shopping, macaroons from Selfridges food hall and wine and Joyce can thoroughly recommend all three.

The day itself dawned with birthday wishes from friends and family and on route to Blackheath and before race Joyce enjoyed chats with other runners who were as excited as she was. Joyce took her time in the race which meant a slow time of 5.44. However, she saw the dinosaur and even overtook it.  The main stars of the day were the crowds of supporters who were awesome on Sunday even though it was cold and they kept the smile on the faces most of the time and made it all the more memorable. Many thanks are due to friend and club mate Susan Callander for her on course support and encouragement throughout the day
