"Around the Houses" 10K Grangemouth

11/04/2016

Jo Zakrzewski travelled to Grangemouth to take part in this race which is in it's 50th year.

Having missed a few weeks of training due to a tendonitis injury, Jo Zakrzewski had been forced to withdraw from her planned spring marathon. Not one to sit around, she decided to test her returning fitness with a 10k roadrace on Sunday instead.

It was the 50th anniversary edition of the Jim Dingwall "Around the Houses" 10k in Grangemouth, and although the route cannot be described as scenic, it is fast and flat, and so the assembled field of almost 1000 runners was described as being the best in any Scottish road race so far this year.

The competition was certainly hot at the front end end, with the first 3 men all being given the same gun time of 31:04 (with 4th place just 2 seconds adrift), while Freya Ross (having just returned from altitude training in Boulder) took the ladies' win in 33:50. Jo had her own battle with several ladies about 20 years her junior (the race was also doubling up as the Scottish Universities' 10K championships) but it is testament to the depth of the field that her time of 35:51 saw her finish as 10th lady (with a mere 21s separating positions 4-10), though she did take home the first veteran lady prize.
