Mickey Mouse Marathon

05/02/2016

A very excited Kellock family travelled to Florida this January to take part in the Walt Disney World Marathon weekend. James and Kirsteen took part in the marathon on Sunday the 10 th January and their children Heather and Iona took part in the kids races which composed of  200m for 4-6yrs and  400m for 7-9yrs and all the family did the Mickey Mile race on the Saturday.

The weekend was really well organised with Disney managing the crowds brilliantly from getting the numbers at the expo to the races themselves. Heather and Iona loved their races despite the heat and humidity even wearing Mini mouse tutus. There was great support for the kids in the Disney stadium. James and Kirsteen found training through the winter hard this year doing most long runs during a busy and wet November and December. This was quite a contrast to the high temperatures and high humidity of the race. Kirsteen was delighted to make the race start due to having an injury. The pair had an early start of 230am as to be there for 4 am for the start. After the usual warm up ( obviously joined by Mickey Mouse ) there was a firework display for every corral start.

Every mile runners were greeted by a character from Disney, with bands and singers all the way along the course and a real party atmosphere. They had so many water and power aid stations as well as Vaseline and muscle rub stops. The highlight for Kirsteen was running through the twinkling Disney castle at night with Ailsa and Anna from frozen with Disney snow falling and huge crowds cheering along the Main Street of Magic Kingdom at approx 6am. The course goes through all the parks at Disney. James highlight was running in the Disney Sports stadium. The pair met all the animals in the Animal Kingdom and ran New York in Hollywood studios before travelling all the countries at Epcot to the Finish.  It was a fantastic experience and they got a very special Mickey mouse medal at the finish. The race is relatively flat. The couple ran together and were happy to finish in 4 hrs 35 with the humidity. The rest of the holiday we walked miles round the theme parks and loved every minuite of one of the happiest places on earth.
