Tinto Hill race

16/11/2015

With the SHR calendar drawing to a close, Tinto hill race usually attracts a large crowd. Not even Storm Abigail would deter runners this year with 244 lining up at the start line. Amongst them were Donald Chalmers, Mo Khan, Craig Malcolmson and Simon Mortlock   representing DRC.

With a start line at 760ft above sea level, there was a definite chill in the air as we waited for the race to begin. Thankfully it was dry but from the foot of the hill, we could see there was a sprinkling of snow waiting for us at the summit.

Thee route follows the walkers path and involves a steady climb from the start, with initial muddy underfoot conditions replaced with slippery rocks higher up. The summit is reached at 2300ft and after a quick run around the cairn, it is a speedy descent back to the finish line.  It’s a short, sharp race that’s over quickly.

Joe Symonds won the race in 32min 22secs. Reflecting the not ideal underfoot conditions, this was the slowest male winning time in 15 years. Shona Robertson won the female race in 40min 19secs.

Craig was the first DRC runner to finish in a time of 41m44. His position of 43rd was his highest placing at this race. Simon was next back in a solid time of 43m24 which was over 30s faster than his last outing on this hill. There was a sprint finish battle between Donald and Mo, with Mo just pipping Donald to the line. Mo finished in 51m30, a PB by 51s, with Donald coming in only 3 secs later.

As usual this was an enjoyable hill race, and the large turnout provides a great opportunity to catch up with likeminded hill runners from different clubs.
