Stranraer 10k

11/11/2015

This race, held last Saturday, has become a well established fixture in the running calendar in Dumfries and Galloway and attracted a very respectable 159 entrants.

Starting and finishing at Stranraer Academy the race has a steep climb halfway round the course which always catches out the unwary or those who have started too quickly.

In all 7 Dumfries Running Club members travelled through and the race was won by former DRC club champion, Edinburgh based Mickey Breen in an excellent 33.54. With support from his older brother David and his father David senior the family trio actually managed to pick up a team prize into the bargain.

The best club performance came from Alastair Stapleton who overcame the wet weather in 19th in 40.17 with Norman Neilson running strongly in 41.55 to win the over 55s male prize as well. After several months out due to injury Franc Karpo was delighted to get back to form in 43.48 and welcome returnee Eleni Barbetsea in her first club race for a long time ran well in 52.01. Fiona Jardine had a strong run in 54.34 as she was using the event to test her fitness for this Sunday’s Brampton to Carlisle 10 mile race. The two best performances of all came from Yeolande Davies and Rhiannon Breed both of whom are graduates of the Monday night beginners section. Whilst Rhiannon completed her debut at the distance last month in Glasgow both were still apprehensive yet ran strongly with Yeolande in 65.23 finishing half a minute in front of Rhiannon.
