Kielder Marathon

07/10/2015

Two DRC members Paula Craven and Nicola Allan took part in the Kielder marathon  in what is claimed to be 'Britain's most beautiful Marathon'.

Perfect running conditions greeted both of them at the small village of Falstone where runners and their supporters are bussed to either the Half Marathon or Marathon starting areas.  This scenic transfer gave the first opportunity to view across Kielder Water with a trip across the dam.

Organised by Steve Cram and his team of helpers, the well-equipped start area made for a brilliant family environment.  After a small delay in starting the perfect conditions allowed the runners to enjoy the amazing views along the whole route which was well supplied with friendly marshals, water and isotonic drink stations.  Kielder Marathon is very different from any road race as it offers the chance to run on soft trails, with uncongested tracks with all the challenges of some mighty hills, in fact with next to no flat sections.

Both runners thoroughly enjoyed the whole event.  This was Paula's 3rd Kielder Marathon and despite limited training and a fall at the 10 mile area she was very happy with a finish time of 4hrs 54 mins. On her debut in the event Nicola was happy with 4 hrs 50 mins and both are keen to return next year
