Hard Rock Challenge

07/10/2015

Now in its 12th year, the hardrock challenge has matured into a real highlight of the sporting calendar and attracts runners and riders from all over eager to test themselves in a very tough event. The initial part is a 10 mile run on forest trails combined with a highly technical 16 miles on the mountain bike with more than its fair share of difficult descents, tricky climbs and hazards.

12 members of Dumfries Running Club took part in the running section and only Craig Malcolmson, using his local knowledge was up for the challenge of the mountain biking. The fastest run of all came from Richard Beck who won the running section in 62.04 and had to strain every sinew to stay two seconds in front of Mark Whitelaw with Alan Baxter third in 62.42. Jacob Tangey ran well in 64.19 with Alastair Stapleton showing his undoubted promise in 66.28. Norman Neilson used his local knowledge in 69.54 to stay twelve seconds in front of Adam Dickie with Seb Pflanz just over a minute adrift. Craig Malcolmson in 74.35 had enough energy for the cycle and completed the whole 26 miles in 2 hours 39. Stephen  Mohan in 78.43 stayed ninety seconds ahead of Bob Green with Alison McKean a further 2 minutes behind. Jo Needham ran well in 93.32 and handed over to her partner Nigel Pennington in the aptly named “ no time to train|” team
