Mabie Trail Race

14/06/2015

After a week of rather un-Scottish hot sunny weather, the day of the Mabie Trail race dawned cool and overcast. The overnight rain had stopped but it made people wonder whether they would still be able to get away with road shoes or if they needed to dig out better gripping trail shoes...

The Mabie 10k is a mixed terrain event, consisting of about 4 miles on forest roads and 2 miles on trail, a lot of which is single track. The appearance of the route changes each year due to forestry work with logging happening by the course, and gravel being laid down on former grassy stretches.

The race, organised by Val Mitchell of Dumfries Harriers, was the second counter in the DRC trail Grand Prix, and so several club members were eager to see how they would fare.

Alan Baxter led the race off from the start at a fast pace, but Jim Buchanan ran a canny race to overhaul him on the climb signalling the start of the second half of the run. Slightly further back in the field, Kevin McQueen pushed Jo Zakrzewski right to the finish, with these two maintaining their respective leads in the Grand Prix. There were fine performances from DRC members throughout the field, with many people recording their fastest times over that course. Sue Jeffrey kindly sacrificed her chance to race, acting as sweeper to make sure that nobody took a wrong turning or got lost.
