Durisdeer Hill Race

13/06/2015

It's not often the local Hill Running fraternity have the chance to compete in a local hill race which doubles as a Scottish Championship let alone a British championship race. All eyes were on Durisdeer on Saturday 13th June where almost 270 hardened hill runners gathered in the sleepy hamlet of Durisdeer near Thornhill for a race that covered 10.5 miles and an ascent/descent of around 3,800 feet...

The  race starts and finishes at the church in Durisdeer and is best described as a teardrop in shape. Runners start straight into a climb on Black Hill then via Pettylung, desending steeply to the road at the Dalveen Farm then up the track through the farm to follow the Enterkin burn upstream. Bearing right at end of valley to Steygail, the runners then descend to Upper Dalveen and cross the main road for a 2nd time to ascend Well Hill where from here they return via Black Hill and a grassy descent to the finish.

Five DRC runners chose this as their preferred run on a weekend where choices of races were in abundance.

First DRC member home was Craig Malcolmson in a time of 2:01:41 for 128th place and was surprised  to shave 10 minutes from his previous best time for race. Second home for DRC was Simon Mortlock who had a storming last mile chasing down club-mate Craig to record a time of 2:03:17 and 134th overall. Next back was James Kellock who ran a steady race on what turned out to be a very warm and clammy day in a time of 2:25:27 (218th place).

Mo Khan who was obviously enjoying his last few weeks of freedom before his impending wedding and made the most of his pre-shackles to finish with dogged determination in a time of 2:43:59 (250th place).

Vicky Hart beat her own predicted time by over 7 minutes and looked delighted with her efforts judging by her huge grin as she finished!

The race was won by Tom Owens of Shettleston Harriers in time of 1:25:00 with Jasmin Paris of Carnethy HR the first placed lady in an incredible time of 1:37:33 and 24th o/a.

A big thanks are owed to Adam Anderson and his crew for organising such a great event, with particular praise going to the ladies who put on a fabulous spread to make sure no one left Durisdeer feeling hungry.

Craig.
