Carlisle Urban Trail 10K

20/05/2015

The Carlisle Urban Trail Race was the first race in the Dumfries Running Club Trail Grand Prix and the second race in the Carlisle 10K series. Nine runners from DRC took on the challenge...

It was a clear, sunny, if windy, evening when 154 runners gathered outside Carlisle Cathedral to take on the Urban Trail Run. A brief run round the twisting cobbled streets of the city took them to the narrow Millennium Bridge over the dual carriageway. Those more accustomed to hill running seemed to negotiate this more easily taking several of the steps at a time on both ascent and descent. Next was a circumnavigation of the Norman Castle staying high on the grass under the walls, looking down on the park below. A surface change to road took the runners to the Sheepmount Stadium, where they headed back onto grass for a wide loop round the playing fields and pitches.

Clubmates and friends could encourage each other on the next section as there was an out and back (initally downstream then upstream) on 2 parallel single tracks through bushes by the river, which was beautiful as the evening light shone through the leaves. The longer upstream section had several muddy puddles to avoid, as well as overhanging branches, but the biggest obstacles were cars reversing and driving into the path of the runners when they climbed up and ran across the Sheepmount carpark.

A little known riverside path was then used along the length of Bitts Park, followed by a muddy scramble up under the bridge onto a track skirting the edge of the golf course. A bridge and gate then saw the runners heading back towards town through Rickerby Park. The number of cows in the park caused a route change, taking out another flight of steps but adding in a road climb onto Brampton Road. After running down the pavement to the Sands Centre, a final dip under the road meant just a few hundred yards to sprint into the tarmac finish in Bitt's Park having covered a distance of just under 10K on all types of terrain.

Despite the wind, all the DRC runners really enjoyed the course (and the bags of crisps and Haribo at the finish) and thanked Doug Brown for his on-course support at various points.
