Screel Hill Race

11/04/2015

The forecast rain stayed away on Saturday 11th April and so the five DRC runners who took on the Screel Hill race were rewarded with sunny 360 degree views from the summit ridge, (even if the wind gusts did almost blow some of the lighter runners over!)...

The route has changed a few times over recent years due to forces of nature, but with thanks to some recent chainsawing, the 2015 race went back to the original route. There is an initial section on forestry road before runners head off up a section of technical single track. After avoiding tree stumps and roots through a recently felled area, the runners disappear into the woods for a brief spell before climbing up to the summit ridge. Once the ridge is gained, there is an undulating rocky run along to the true summit and then a steep descent back down to the forest road. A sharp turn away from the road saw the runners using hands and knees to scramble back up the hillside to just below the ridge. They then retraced their initial steps down the hill, through the woods, deforested area, single track and forest road back to the start and a welcome drink.

Craig Malcolmson, who used his local knowledge of the hill to make better route choices than other runners, clearly enjoyed the whole race and was first back for the club, finishing in 36:21 for 6th place overall (1st V50).

Next home was Adam Dickie who, although said he struggled initially due to a recent chest infection raced back down to the finish in 37:45, though not quite quickly enough for his young son who slept through his first appearance at a race!

Jo Zakrzewski showed her strength on the ascent, achieving the ridge as first DRC member (and first lady), but managed to laugh at her own poor descending technique as she watched many runners gallop past her on the downhill. Jo finished in 43:27 as second lady, the position she has now earned in each of her three appearances at this race! Sue Jeffrey was still feeling the effects of her run in the Loughrigg Fell race earlier in the week, but did not want to miss her favourite hill race of the year and finished in 50:10 with a smile on her face. Frank Skachill seems to have developed a taste for hill races, and showed his mettle with a tight sprint finish to record 51:11.

The race was won by Deeside Runners' James Espie in 31:54 with Kirsten Leslie from Dalbeattie Running Club the first lady in 38:37.

It was interesting to see Haddington's Brian Marshall, who is usually right up at the sharp end of hill races, finishing in 40th place on the day. Brian's lower than usual position was due to him running the race barefoot as preparation for a similar attempt in the Glamaig race on Skye!

Thanks go to race organiser Dougie Milligan, timekeepers Doug Brown, Seb Pflanz, Bob and Sheena Green and on course supporter Steve Mohan.
