Loughrigg Fell Race

08/04/2015

On Wednesday 8th April, Ambleside AC once again played host to the popular Loughrigg Fell race and five keen Fell runners from Dumfries made the journey to the Lakes to participate...

Mo Khan and Sue Jeffrey returned for a second year after an enjoyable race in 2014, Simon and Jonathan Mortlock took on the challenge after an exciting day rock climbing in the Lake District whilst Frank Skatchill made his debut in this event.

With almost perfect running conditions, the race began at Rothay Park. A quick start meant that all 189 entrants reached a bottleneck bridge at the foot of the arduous 0.6 mile tarmac climb before opening out onto a more gentle but rocky dirt track. The final mile of ascent on open hillside consisted mainly of grassy paths, short rocky sections and the occasional bog to negotiate. Simon was first to the summit cairn, followed by Jonathan. With Jonathan just in sight, Mo pushed hard for the summit and not far behind them were Sue and Frank who were keeping an eye out for their teammates.

The performance of the night came from Jonathan who had a fantastic decent and overtook his dad Simon in the final section of the race to finish in 37:56 in 109th position. Simon finished one second behind in 37:57 for 110th position. After a solid ascent, Mo had a shaky start to his descent, but with the fear of his first ever ‘DNF’ on his mind he quickly composed himself and continued at a steady pace to finish at 41:57 and 141th.

Sue wasn’t too pleased with her performance on the climb and so made it her mission to overtake as many people as possible on the decent. It was all going well until she navigated herself into a thigh-deep mud hole shortly before hitting the final track section. With the loss of momentum Sue wasn’t able to make up any further places but was pleased to knock a minute off last year’s time, finishing in 42:43 and 149th position.

Last but not least was Frank who finished in 44:55 and 162nd position. He thoroughly enjoyed the race and was overheard stating that he loved every minute of it and that it was valuable training for the upcoming Highland Fling relay at the end of April.

It was overall a fantastic evening, with a great turnout and lively atmosphere. The race is very well supported by locals which makes a huge difference to a performance when someone shouts ‘well done Dumfries’ when tackling a gruelling uphill slog. Also, a special thanks to The Mortlock family for their support and for Steve Jeffrey (senior) and Steve Jeffrey (junior) cheering on at the finish line.
