The New York City Half Marathon

15/03/2015

Central Park was the iconic setting for the start of the 2015 New York City Half Marathon and Dumfries Running Club members Danny Queen and daughter Sarah lined up alongside the 20,000 other competitors running on the streets of 'The Big Apple'...

The early 07:30 start meant that the sun came up on the bitterly cold morning only 10 mins before the start of the race. The first 6 miles was run round a surprisingly hilly Central Park with the largest challenge being Harlem Hill 3 miles in. Both Sarah and Danny lost valuable time in the first few miles dealing with runner congestion from the crowded start.

Once out of the Park it was down 7th avenue and through Times Square which was shut to traffic for one of only two times during the whole year, this race and the celebrations to herald in the New Year. Continuing East along 42nd Street to the Hudson River, and then South for the final 5 miles down to Battery Park at the bottom of Manhattan. A truly magnificent setting for a race.

Both runners produced excellent performances on the day, with Sarah finishing in a highly creditable 197th place out of over 10,000 female runners in 93 minutes and 32 seconds, placing her 1086th overall. Danny finished in 646th place in a time of 88 minutes and 32 seconds. He was delighted to come first in his 60-64 age group, beating over 220 fellow runners, including the former age group winner for the past two years by almost 3 minutes. Sarah and Danny had a very successful race combined with a great break in the Big Apple.

Danny.
