The Inverness Half Marathon

07/03/2015

On Saturday 7th March Sid and Linda Oates along with Gemma Leadbetter made a trip north to take part in the Inverness Half Marathon...

The weekend got off to an interesting start with Sid and Linda taking a detour via Edinburgh after alighting the wrong (albeit adjacent) train in Glasgow, with Gemma left staring at their empty seats. Nevertheless they all made it in plenty of time to enjoy their respective evening plans including the all important pre-race carb-loading and the trio met up in the registration hall on race day.

The race itself began at 12.30 in Bught Park, which also plays host to the Loch Ness Marathon Festival in September. The opening 4 miles of the course follows the final stages of the marathon route in reverse before taking a turn towards Inverness Royal Academy and meandering around some leafy residential areas. The final third of the race then follows the river back to Bught Park to finish in glorious support on the running track. Whilst billed as a “predominantly flat course with no testing hills” all found the slow undulating climb from 2 to 5 miles hard going. Furthermore with a strong head wind, the following undulating 4 miles were similarly testing.

All agreed it was much tougher than expected. Linda was the first to cross the line in 1hr 55 mins followed by Sid in 2 hrs 3 mins with Gemma a further 10 seconds behind.
