Dentdale 14

14/03/2015

14 members of DRC kicked the 2015 Grand Prix off with the Dentdale 14.2 mile race. It was a cold and breezy day, but luckily the snow stayed on the surrounding hills rather than appearing on the course! Recent rains added to the interest as the route was slightly flooded at the 7 mile point, but a more interesting feature of the hilly race was the llamas in a field at 11 miles...

Alan Baxter (in his first race as a V40) stamped his authority on the Grand Prix with a 5:35 2nd mile, and led the Club's runners home from start to finish. Jo Zakrzewski took a calculated risk on a wardrobe malfunction as she didn't know the gap between herself and second lady, and so ran the last 6 miles with only one tied shoelace, but this paid off with a new ladies' CR. Kevin Conchar (who had chosen the race over a family outing to the football) was not far behind as he continues his return to racing form.

Graeme Cross and Kevin McCaig worked off each other for almost the whole race, with Graeme just edging ahead in the final few miles. The timing of the race was slightly unfortunate for Sandy Shankland - 2 weeks later and he would have been the youngest runner in his new age category, and he was followed by Stephen Mohan who seems to be starting the year in fine form.

Sian Finlay was pleased with a good strong performance, with Peter Hill making a return to racing as the next man home. Dawn McDonald and Susan Gallagher encouraged each other until Susan had to make an emergency pitstop within a couple of miles of the finish.  Frank Skachill returned to racing from the injured stakes and Chris Wilson used the tough course as good hard training in his marathon buildup. Margaret Laurie had to push right to the finish as the timing of the bus back to Dumfries didn't give her much time to recover and enjoy her cream tea, but all the runners "enjoyed" the toughness of the course, with the friendliness and encouragement given by local supporters at it's usual high standard.

Jo.
